Return from exile

I returned to live in Somerset in 2016 after 30 years living in the “Eastern Marches” of England. A time I refer to as my exile. I started to post pieces on grockles.com at the end of that season. It led to other posters on the site asking from whence I had suddenly emerged. This article, posted about three weeks after I first started to post was my reply. In it I tried to capture my love for Somerset and its cricket.

All these years, or at least for most of the last three decades until this year, I lived in exile in the Eastern Marches of Southern England. There my white Somerset hat and maroon and white umbrella walked the streets in splendid isolation to the bemused curiosity of the local inhabitants.

‘Farmer White’ Somerset Cricket Writing

The purpose of this website is to provide a location where the collected cricket writing of ‘Farmer White’ can be accessed and read in one location. ‘Farmer White’ primarily writes Somerset match reports, but also, from time to time, writes articles about individual players, historic matches (defined as pre-2017 for the purposes of this site) which he attended and poems.

Match reports, which have been added regularly since the beginning of the 2017 season are written unashamedly from a Somerset perspective, but try to give a balanced view of the play, equally reflecting good and bad play from both sides. Reports try to reflect the atmosphere of a match and the experience of being a Somerset supporter. On occasion, where ‘Farmer White’ is unable to attend a match in person, a report may be written using the live stream broadcasts of the counties. Where this occurs, ‘Farmer White’ always informs the relevant counties that he is doing so. No county has ever objected and some respond with supportive messages. In this regard, Somerset CCC have been particularly supportive and encourging in their responses. He also, occasionally writes a report on the experience of following a match that he cannot attend or have access to the live stream, an experience suffered by most county supporters.

Most of the site content focuses on Somerset cricket, but occasionally an item not directly related to Somerset cricket may appear.

This is a ‘blog’ style website and so all posts appear on the Home Page. The most recently dated post appears at the top. Beyond that posts appear in reverse date order.

Please refer to the ‘Site Guide’ page for advice on how to navigate the site. The ‘contents’ page which contains links to some of the earlier items, is no longer updated because of the number of match reports, articles and poems now on the site, upwards of 350 at the time of the last update of this information with more being added all the time.

‘Farmer White’

‘Farmer White’

‘Farmer White’, the author of this site, was brought up on the story of one of Somerset’s greatest cricketers, JC ‘Farmer’ White; of how his slow left arm bowling was the epitome of accuracy and that he captained England.

An indelible impression was made and, as indelible impressions do, it has remained with him.

When, at the end of the 2016 season, he began to post reports and occasional articles and poems on threads on grockles.com and needed a posting name ‘Farmer White’ was the natural choice.

JC ‘Farmer’ White 1891-1961

JC ‘Jack’ or ‘Farmer’ White played for Somerset CCC from 1907-37. He captained the side from 1927-31.

He remains the County’s leading First Class wicket taker with 2167 at an average of 18.02. He took 100 First Class wickets in a season 14 times.

With the bat he scored six centuries and scored 1000 runs in a season twice.

He took 381 catches.

He played in 15 Tests for England and captained England four times.

In the 1928-9 Ashes series he was England’s top wicket taker with 25.

In the Adelaide Test he took 13 for 256 in 124.5 overs and England won by 12 runs.
